Álljon meg a tér közepén, és forduljon körbe egyszer, lassan. Ez Szentendre főtere, és a formája elárulja, mire használták: kereskedelemre. A házak földszintjén boltok voltak, az emeleten lakott a kereskedő családja. A tér közepén álló kereszt a tizennyolcadik századból való, és a hagyomány szerint a helyi kereskedők állíttatták, hálából egy járvány elmúltáért. Nézze meg a homlokzatokat. Barokk formák, élénk színek, szűk telkek. Ez nem magyar falusi építészet, és nem is bécsi nagyvárosi: ez egy olyan város, amelyet a tizenhetedik és tizennyolcadik században délről érkezett, főként szerb kereskedő családok építettek fel. Aki itt megtelepedett, kiváltságokat kapott, és cserébe kereskedett. Ebből lett ez a tér.

Stand in the middle of the square and turn around once, slowly. This is the main square of Szentendre, and its shape tells you what it was for: trade. There were shops on the ground floors, and the merchant's family lived upstairs. The cross in the middle of the square dates from the eighteenth century, and by tradition it was put up by the local merchants in thanks for the end of an epidemic. Look at the facades. Baroque forms, strong colours, narrow plots. This is not Hungarian village architecture, and it is not grand Viennese either. This is a town built up in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries by families who came from the south, most of them Serbian merchants. Those who settled here were granted privileges, and in return they traded. This square is what came of it.

Induljon el felfelé a főtértől, és számolja meg a tornyokat. Egy ekkora városban feltűnően sok van belőlük. Ennek oka nem a jámborság, hanem a betelepülés rendje: az ide érkező közösségek nem egyszerre és nem egy helyről jöttek, és mindegyik a maga templomát építette fel. Egymás mellett élt itt több ortodox közösség, a katolikusok és a reformátusok. A tornyok tehát nem díszek, hanem egy betelepülési térkép. Ha felmegy a dombra, onnan az egész belváros belátható, és jól látszik, hogy a tetők milyen szorosan simulnak egymáshoz. Ez az a pont, ahol a legtöbb fénykép készül a városról, és megérdemli. Itt véget ér ez a két állomásos minta. A teljes séta tíz-tizenkét állomásos, és tovább megy a Duna-partig és a művésztelepig.

Set off uphill from the main square, and count the towers. For a town this size there are strikingly many of them. The reason is not piety, but the order in which people settled here: the communities that arrived did not come at the same time or from the same place, and each of them built its own church. Several Orthodox communities lived here side by side with Catholics and Protestants. So the towers are not decoration. They are a map of settlement. If you walk up the hill, you can see the whole old town from there, and you can see how tightly the roofs press against each other. This is where most photographs of the town are taken, and it deserves them. This two stop sample ends here.
